Writing

“Write the kind of story you would like to read. People will give you all sorts of advice about writing, but if you are not writing something you like, no-one else will like it either.”

— Meg Cabot.

BWJPS Approach to Writing

At BWJPS, it is important that the children are aware that writing is a necessity for life and we ensure that every opportunity is taken to plan for cross curricular links in our curriculum. To ensure that there is a seamless link between reading and writing, teachers plan a ‘text-based approach’ which uses one main text to teach reading and writing from. However, this is sometimes veered away from to encourage opportunities for cross-curricular writing. Children are encouraged to find key structures and grammatical features of the text and use these in their own writing. A writing sequence is used from years 1 to 6 to ensure a consistent approach is maintained. This also enables children to build on prior learning.

Spelling will be taught as an additional slot on the timetable where the focus will be on the rule. It will be school policy that all pupils will be given words to learn each week or are taught words in class. Teachers will also seek to encourage independent spelling by children when they are producing written work. Teachers will not correct every misspelled word in a piece of written work but should select key words for the children to focus on.

At Bury and Whitefield Jewish Primary School, we place a high value on writing. The children are encouraged to:

– Develop the stamina and skills to write at length.
– Stretch and deepen vivid imaginations.
– Use accurate spelling and punctuation.
– Apply a range of grammar rules.
– Write in a range of ways and purposes.
– Write to support understanding and consolidate.
– Develop a love of writing and an appreciation of its educational, cultural and entertainment values.
