About Our School

Our Ethos and Values

Bury and Whitefield Jewish Primary School is committed to providing a caring, welcoming and secure environment where every child feels a strong sense of belonging. We strive to inspire all pupils to achieve their best, while recognising and celebrating each child’s individual needs and successes.

Our curriculum is designed to be engaging, balanced and fully aligned with statutory requirements. Through the teaching of Judaism in accordance with Halacha, the promotion of Jewish values, an appreciation of the State of Israel, and the celebration of Jewish worship, our pupils are supported to thrive and grow. We aim to nurture a deep love and understanding of their Jewish faith and heritage in every child.

The five elements that underpin our core values are:

Simcha –
We’re happy when we’re learning, we’re learning when we’re happy.

Middos –
We are kind and we do the best we can in all areas of school life.

Achdus –
We work together to make our school a community.

Ruach –
We all help to make our school a lovely place to be.

Torah –
Learning, thinking, living Torah.

Our Curriculum Values

The six elements that underpin our curriculum values are:

Resilience, Creativity, Critical thinking, Curiosity, Challenge and Culture.

Alongside our academic curriculum, we place great importance on teaching children to respect themselves and others. We aim to nurture a caring and responsible attitude towards people within the school and the wider community, while also developing pupils’ awareness and understanding of moral, social and environmental issues.

School History
Organisation
Structure

BWJPS was established in 1984 by a group of parents as a Jewish school for the local community. Its original aims were developed by the Spear Trust (Jewish Educational Development Fund). Since then, the school has grown and evolved, and now provides an excellent state education for its pupils.

Our school is organised into single-form and mixed-age classes.

Children join us at the age of three in the Foundation Stage before moving into Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2), where the National Curriculum is followed. National assessments are carried out at the end of Year 2.

In Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6), pupils continue to follow the National Curriculum and complete statutory assessments at the end of Year 6 before moving on to secondary school.

The school runs a Breakfast Club from 8:00am to 8:45am, which is staffed by qualified members of staff. Please contact the school office for further information, including pricing.

The school day begins at 8:45am for all pupils. If a child arrives after 8:55am, they should report to the school office so they can be recorded in the register.

From Monday to Thursday, the school day ends at 3:30pm for EYFS children, and at 3:45pm for pupils in Years 1 to 6. On Fridays, all pupils finish at 3:30pm. This amounts to a total of 34.75 hours per week.

During the winter months (October to March), early Friday finishes are in place in line with Shabbat times. These vary between 1:30pm and 2:30pm and are published in the school calendar. A 2:30pm finish results in a 34-hour week, while a 1:30pm finish results in a 33-hour week.
