Year 4
Year 4
In Year 4, we embark on an exciting journey filled with curiosity, creativity, and discovery. Our class is all about exploring new ideas, building on what we’ve learned, and working together as a team. From fascinating history lessons to challenging maths problems, we aim to develop our skills, confidence, and love of learning.
Please Click HERE for more information on what will be taught throughout the year.
Year 4 Multiplication Check
In Year 4, pupils will take the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) to assess their knowledge of the times tables up to 12. This is an important milestone in their mathematical development, helping to ensure they are confident and fluent in multiplication. To support your child in preparing for the MTC, we’ve provided some helpful resources below. Practising regularly at home will make a big difference!
- Times Tables Rock Stars – A fun and interactive way to practise times tables.
- BBC Bitesize Multiplication – Games and activities tailored to the MTC.
- Hit the Button – A quick-fire game to boost times tables recall.
- Timestables.co.uk – A way to practise with an mock go at the MTC, make sure you set the setting to 6 seconds and 25 questions.
SATs & End of Year Assessment
There are optional SATs tests in English and Maths. The statutory SATs take place in Year 6 and these results are reported to the government. In Years 1 – 5, children complete optional SATS and these results, along with teacher assessments throughout the year inform the final judgement. Children also complete a statutory phonics screening test, in Year 1, and a multiplication check in Year 4.
Homework
As you can see, we have a packed curriculum. In order to meet all the requirements of the National Curriculum, homework plays a vital part in our year. The children will need a quiet place to complete their work, away from distractions. As a rule, they will have between 15 and 30 minutes every night. All homework will be written down in their homework diaries. If the children need support with their homework it is important that we all support them with it. The children should ALWAYS attempt homework by themselves but should they be struggling or becoming confused please do help them with it. Once again, if there are any problems, please let me know.
Reading
At BWJPS, reading for pleasure is extremely important. To encourage this, we have a reading for pleasure slot every day where we encourage children to read a variety of books.
Equipment
It is really important that children have all the required equipment in school all the time and that all uniform and PE kit is clearly labelled. It is also important that kit is checked each term to ensure that it still fits and is still suitable for PE lessons.

Please label all equipment and replace it when required.
