Maths

“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.”

— Shakuntala Devi.

BWJPS Approach to Maths

The maths curriculum at BWJPS follows the pedagogy of Teaching for Mastery. Our schemes of learning are taken from the White Rose Maths, who believe in creating; ‘a culture that produces strong, secure learning and real progress.’

Children at BWJPS learn through the explicit teaching of small steps, operating under one learning objective. Within this, mathematical, conceptual knowledge is deepened through effective questioning. This is supported by the explicit teaching of mathematical vocabulary and exposing children to conceptual and non-conceptual variation. Greater depth is secured through children making mathematical connections through refined skills in reasoning.

In addition to daily mathematics lessons, we have weekly timetabled arithmetic and number fluency sessions to ensure all children are confident and competent in core mathematical knowledge and skills.

The goal of our Maths teaching is to deliver the core aims of the National Curriculum. Our children will be taught to be confident, successful and proficient mathematicians who can apply their Maths to other contexts and situations. We want our children to leave Primary school ‘Secondary ready’, to be curious about all elements of maths and to have solid foundations for future learning.
