British Values and SMSC
At BWJPS, we are committed to promoting British values and the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of every pupil. These principles underpin our ethos, teaching, and wider school life, helping children grow into responsible, respectful, and confident members of society.
How We Promote British Values
We actively promote the five key British values:
-
Democracy – Pupils have opportunities to express their opinions through school councils, class discussions, and voting on decisions affecting their learning and environment.
-
Rule of Law – Children learn about the importance of rules, laws, and consequences, both within school and the wider community.
-
Individual Liberty – We encourage pupils to make safe choices, express their ideas, and pursue personal interests and talents.
-
Mutual Respect – Respect for others is central to our ethos, reinforced through assemblies, lessons, and daily interactions.
-
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs – Our curriculum fosters understanding and appreciation of diversity, helping pupils develop empathy and open-mindedness.
How We Promote SMSC
Through our curriculum and wider school life, we support pupils’ SMSC development:
-
Spiritual – Pupils reflect on their own beliefs, values, and experiences through assemblies, RE lessons, and creative activities.
-
Moral – Our school encourages pupils to distinguish right from wrong, make ethical decisions, and understand the consequences of their actions.
-
Social – Children develop skills to collaborate, communicate, and build positive relationships with peers and adults.
-
Cultural – Pupils explore a range of cultural traditions, heritage, and contemporary issues, fostering appreciation and respect for diversity.
Integration in Our Curriculum
British values and SMSC are embedded across all subjects. From history and Jewish Studies lessons to PSHE, science, and literature, pupils encounter opportunities to discuss ideas, challenge thinking, and celebrate differences. Our enrichment activities—including school trips, clubs, and community projects—further support these principles in real-life contexts.
At BWJPS, promoting British values and SMSC is not just a statutory requirement; it is central to nurturing well-rounded, responsible, and thoughtful citizens of the future.
